Isaiah 9:6
New International Version
“For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government
will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty
God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.”
Majority of the English Bible
Translations will follow the above wording or translation as is in NIV.
One common ground to assert, before proceeding in explaining the above scripture is that all agree that the child referred here is the Savior or Messiah Yahshua (Jesus).

Please take note that this Scripture of Isaiah is of prophetic nature
speaking about the far off future when the Messiah Yahshua will reign as King
of his Kingdom on Earth for a 1000 years. We understand this from the words,

EXPLANATION:
Important to take note, is the FUTURE TENSE used here, by the Writer
using the words, “And He will be
called.”
This Prophecy mentioned at Scripture Isaiah 9:6 is yet to be fulfilled. It is speaking about a future event that has not yet happened even in the year 2015.
WRONG
USE OF WORD, “NAME” IN MANY MODERN ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS:
First and foremost, the references in Isaiah 9:6 are
TITLES and NOT NAMES. As a matter of fact, in the Original Hebrew Copies of
Isaiah 9:6 there is no equivalent word for the English word NAME used in many
versions.
And He will be called
וַיִּקְרָ֨א (way·yiq·rā)
Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - third person masculine
singular
Strong's 7121: To call, proclaim, read
Generally a name refers to
a specific thing (distinctive name), and a title refers to a thing that
fulfills a requirement or a role (descriptive
name).
So here at Isaiah 9:6, Yahshua (Jesus) was being given AHEAD OF TIME the honor of going to receive these below mentioned DESCRIPTIVE TITLES.
LET’S TAKE THE DESCRIPTIVE PROPHETIC TITLES APPLIED TO YAHSHUA AND UNDERSTAND THEM ONE BY ONE:
Wonderful
פֶּ֠לֶא (pe·le)
Noun - masculine singular
Strong's 6382: A miracle
Counselor,
יוֹעֵץ֙ (yō·w·‘êṣ)
Verb - Qal - Participle - masculine singular
Strong's 3289: To advise, to deliberate, resolve
Mighty
גִּבּ֔וֹר (gib·bō·wr)

Strong's 1368: Powerful, warrior, tyrant

Strong's 410: Strength -- as adjective, mighty, the
Almighty
Everlasting Father,

Noun - proper - masculine singular
Strong's 5703: A, terminus, duration, advance,
perpetuity

Total of 04 Descriptive Titles can be
found in the Scripture of Isaiah 9:6:
1. Wonderful
Counselor
2. Mighty
God
3. Everlasting
Father
4. Prince
of Peace
“Of the increase of his government and peace there
shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to
order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth
even forever. The
zeal of Yahweh of hosts will perform this.”
Ø Wonderful Counselor. Yahshua’s counsel is always practical and perfect.
Following it leads to salvation.—Isaiah
9:6; John 6:68.
Ø Yahshua proved himself to be the promised
“Wonderful Counselor” (Isa 9:6) by
his knowledge of Elohim’s Word and will,
by his understanding of human nature, by his ability to get to the heart of
questions and issues, and by showing the solution to problems of daily living.
The well-known Sermon on the Mount is a prime example Yahshua being a Wonderful
Counselor. (Mt 5-7) In it his
counsel showed the way to true happiness, how to settle quarrels, how to avoid
immorality, how to deal with those showing enmity, the way to practice
righteousness free from hypocrisy, the right attitude toward the material
things of life, confidence in Elohim’s generosity, the golden rule for right
relationships with others, the means for detecting religious frauds, and how to
build for a secure future. The crowds were “astounded at his way of teaching;
for he was teaching them as a person having authority, and not as their
scribes.” (Mt 7:28, 29)
Ø In his teachings, Yahshua also offered wise
counsel for everyday living. He proved himself to be the foretold “Wonderful
Counselor.” (Isaiah 9:6) Indeed, how
could his counsel be anything but wonderful? He had a profound knowledge of
Elohim Yahweh’s Word and Will, a keen understanding of human nature, and a deep
love for humankind. Hence, his counsel was always practical and in the best
interests of his listeners. Yahshua uttered “sayings of everlasting life.” Yes,
when followed, his counsel leads to salvation.—John 6:68.
Ø When on earth, Yahshua proved to be the
“Wonderful Counselor.” Because of his knowledge of Elohim’s Word and his
extraordinary understanding of human nature, Yahshua knew how to solve the
problems of daily life. Since his enthronement in heaven, the Messiah continues
to be the “Wonderful Counselor,” serving as the principal figure in Yahweh’s channel
of communication to mankind. Yahshua’s counsel, recorded in the Bible, is
always wise and flawless. Knowing and believing this can lead you to a life
free of uncertainty and paralyzing fear.
Ø For all these potent reasons, God’s heavenly
Prince is fully able to serve mankind as “Wonderful Counselor.” (Isaiah 9:6) His counsel is always
wise, perfect, and infallible. As the Mediator between Yahweh God and those who
have been taken into the new covenant.
2. MIGHTY
GOD
The words (or titles) found in
the literal meaning of the name do apply directly to the Messiah all right but
in a subordinate sense. In other words, Yahshua is "a mighty god" or a “Mighty El”
in the same sense that Elohim Yahweh’s
angels were called "gods" and the judges of Israel were called
"gods" by the Creator himself
(also called by Jesus (Yahshua) - John
10:34, 35), and Moses was called "a god" by Yahweh himself. Yahshua surely can be called in
English as a Mighty God but NOT as the Almighty God Yahweh.
Yahshua being directly created
as the FIRST BORN of Yahweh. – Colossians
1:15 - “Who is the image of the invisible El, the
firstborn of every creature:”
Also Yahshua as per
scripture Philippians 2:6 |
|
“Who,
being in the form of Elohim, thought it not robbery to be equal with Elohim:” So Yahshua had the form or morphe which means only external appearance (morphe). He also was the IMAGE of the
INVISIBLE ELOHIM YAHWEH. Hence in that sense, the Bible calling or referring
to Yahshua as MIGHTY EL or MIGHTY GOD is absolutely not wrong. It is wrong
when Christians INFER (add an extra external meaning or shade or flavor) that
Mighty God means or is equal = to Almighty God Yahweh. This external non
scriptural inference is wrong. Always Almighty Elohim is the
Father Yahweh. (He never has a beginning.) Always Mighty El is the Son
Yahshua. (Yahshua being first born and created has a beginning) VERY
IMPORTANT This title of Mighty God or Mighty
El has been revealed to us through Prophet Isaiah which is a FUTURISTIC
DESCRIPTIVE TITLE which will be honored upon the Son Yahshua only once he
successfully starts his GOVERNMENT AND RULE over his Messianic Kingdom on
Earth. Remember, Yahshua will be called,
Mighty God ………….. IN THE FAR AWAY FUTURE. |
|
Nothing
wrong in Yahshua being called as Mighty God or Mighty El
Yahshua is rightly "a
mighty god" in the same sense that (Elohim’s) God's angels were called
"gods" and the judges of Israel were called "gods" by God
(Elohim) himself (also by Yahshua
(Jesus) at - John 10:34, 35), and
Moses was called "a god" by Yahweh himself.
Men and angels were called gods (elohim - Hebrew; theos - Greek) in a proper, but
subordinate, sense by Yahweh and his inspired Bible writers. Although
they were given this elevated title in a proper sense (not false gods), it was
obviously with the clear understanding that it in no way implied a comparison
with the Most High, Only True
God Yahweh.
(A bank employee calling his boss, the head of the bank, "the
president" would certainly not imply an equality of position, power, etc.
with "The President" [of the USA].)
The word
"god" as understood by those who used that term simply meant a
"mighty one" - see Young's Concordance.
In fact the word "Mighty" as found at Isaiah. 9:6 (Gibbor in the original Hebrew) is
also applied to the angels at Psalms. 103:20 (see a modern concordance such as
the New American Standard Exhaustive Concordance of
the Bible). It is interesting that the ancient
translation of the Old Testament that Yahshua (Jesus) frequently quoted, the
Septuagint Version, renders Isaiah. 9:6: "and his [the Messiah's] name is
called the Angel [aggeloV, messenger] of Great
Counsel."
The very early (ca. 160 A.D.) Christian Justin Martyr quoted Isaiah. 9:6 also as "The Angel of mighty counsel" - "Dialogue With Trypho," ch. LXXVI.
So, just as
"Lord" was applied to anyone in authority: angels, masters over servants, husbands, etc., so, too,
could "god" be applied to anyone (good or bad) who was considered a
"mighty person." Of course only one person could be called the
"Most High God," or the "Only True God," or the
"Almighty God” and that is the Almighty Elohim Yahweh.
Instead of "Mighty God,"
Dr. James Moffatt translated this part of Isaiah. 9:6 as "a divine
hero;" Byington has "Divine Champion;" The New English Bible has "In
Battle Godlike;" The Catholic New American Bible (1970 and 1991 revision)
renders it "God-Hero;" and the REB says
"Mighty Hero." Even that most-respected of Biblical Hebrew
language experts, Gesenius, translated it "mighty hero" - p. 45, Gesenius' Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon.
Also,
The NIV Study Bible, in a f.n. for
Ps 45:6, tells us:
"In this psalm, which praises the king and especially extols his `splendor
and majesty' (v. 3), it is not unthinkable that he was called `god' as a title of honor [cf. Isaiah 9:6]."
(Bracketed information included in original footnote. Emphasis is mine)
In addition, Rotherham has rendered "Eternal Father" as "father
of progress," and the New English Bible translates it: "father of
a wide realm."
The above-mentioned Bible translations by Trinitarian scholars which apply the
words in the name at Isaiah. 9:6 in a subordinate sense directly to Yahshua (Jesus)
clearly show that they do not believe this scripture implies equality with
Yahweh the Father.
ü The
word in English that is “Everlasting” has been chosen by the Bible Translators
for the Hebrew Word ’ă·ḇî·‘aḏ in Hebrew.
ü Remember
that it’s a TITLE that is bestowed upon Yahshua in the immediate future.
ü Yahshua
is never been called in the past or present with this title. Only on successful
completion of his father’s work, he will be bestowed upon with this title,
“Everlasting Father”.
ü The Almighty Elohim Yahweh is bestowing this title on his MONOGENES (one and only one unique) Son Yahshua.
ü Similar
situation to this title is an EYE OPENING AND JAW DROPPING Scenario which like
this Title has not happened in real life too. In the Prophetic Psalms of 110.
Psalms 110
1Yahweh
declared to my Lord: “Sit at my right handa Until I place your enemies as a stool for
your feet.”b
2 Yahweh will extend the scepter of your power
out of Zion, saying: “Go subduing in the midst of your enemies.”c
3 Your
people will offer themselves willingly on the day of your military force.*In
splendid holiness, from the womb of the dawn, You have your company of young
men just like dewdrops.
4 Yahweh
has sworn an oath, and he will not change his mind:*“You are
a priest foreverd In the
manner of Mel·chizʹe·dek!”e
5 Yahweh will be at your right hand;f He will crush kings on the day of his anger.g
6 He will
execute judgment against* the
nations;h He will fill the land with dead
bodies.i He will
crush the leader* of
a vast land.*
7 He* will
drink from the stream along the road. Therefore, he will hold his head high.
Read Psalms 1 first:
Yahweh tells his Son Yahshua to SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND. Yahweh is as always on his Heavenly Throne and his Son is bestowed the right to sit at his FATHERS RIGHT HAND SIDE.
Now read Psalms 5:
A Supreme change in Position and Power changes for a short while. The Almighty Father gives all authority under heaven and earth in the future when his Son Yahshua comes warring against all the enemies of Yahweh. Note what the Prophetic Scripture mentions. NOW YAHSHUA IS SITTING ON THE MAIN HEAVENLY THRONE AND HIS ALMIGHTY FATHER IS BACKING HIM UP BY HE SITING ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF HIS SON’S THRONE.
Now this future event when this SHOW OF CHANGE IN POWER FOR A PURPOSE will be enacted, does it mean that Yahshua the Son is now Yahweh the Father. No. Absolutely not.
It is
the most powerful way to show that Almighty Elohim Yahweh is going to BACK UP
Yahshua in every possible way.
Matthew
28:18 |
“And Yahshua came and spake unto them, saying, All power
is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” |
WARNING NOTE
Many English translations have kept Yahweh as LORD and Yahshua as
Lord in the Old Testament Scriptures. Some to make matters even worse and
confusing, so they have either kept both Father and Son references as LORD in
caps or in small case letters as Lord.
Then the impact of Verse 1 and 5 of Psalms 110 is totally lost. To me this is purely Satan at play.
The next
name/title is אֲבִי־עַד (aVI-AD), which appears in the Hebrew Bible only once –
at Isaiah 9:5. Consequently,
no comparisons are possible, though some analysis helps to understand its
usage. This name/title is a possessive phrase that consists of two components. The
first component, אֲבִי (aVI), is the possessive form of the noun אָב (AV). The
noun אָב appears in the Hebrew Bible 723 times in its singular form and in
different inflections and combinations with various prepositions, conjunctions,
and other terms, and is used in several different contexts. The predominant
application is as a father. However, the (singular) noun is also applied as:
(a) a grandfather (e.g., Genesis 31:42, 32:10); (b) a progenitor of a line of
descendants (e.g., Genesis 17:4, Isaiah 51:2); (c) one who is the first of a
kind or an inventor (e.g., Genesis 4:20,21); (d) an advisor, a counselor, a
patron (e.g., Genesis 45:8, Job 29:16); (e) a founder (e.g., Joshua 17:1,
1Chronicles 2:50). In addition, the term is used as a form of address to a
prophet, a king, and others (e.g., 1Samuel 24:12, 2Kings 5:13), and in the
plural form it has additional applications, none of which are relevant to the
verse being analyzed. Consequently, the first component of this name/title
אֲבִי can have meanings such as, father of…, or grandfather of…, or progenitor
of…, etc. The second component of this name/title is עַד (AD), and it is used
in Hebrew as a preposition, such as by [in the temporal sense, such as by a
certain time]; to, up-to; till, until, and also as a noun, eternity, when in
combinations with other terms.

Isaiah 9:6 has been honestly
translated in many Bible footnotes as:
“And his name is called: Wonderful in counsel IS God the Mighty, the
Everlasting Father, the Ruler of Peace” - The Holy Scriptures, JPS Version
(Margolis, ed.)
to show that it is intended to
praise the God of the Messiah who performs great things through the Messiah.
Also, An American Translation
(by Trinitarians Smith and Goodspeed) says:
“Wonderful Counselor IS God
Almighty, Father forever, Prince of Peace.”
Of course it could also be honestly translated:
“The Wonderful Counselor and Mighty God Is
the Eternal Father of the Prince
of Peace.”[5]
And the Tanakh
by the JPS, 1985, translates it:
[a]“The Mighty God is
planning grace;
[b] The Eternal Father [is] a peaceable ruler.”
This latter translation seems particularly appropriate since it is in the form
of a parallelism. Not only was the previous symbolic personal name introduced
by Isaiah at Is. 8:1 a parallelism (“Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz” means [a]“quick to
the plunder; [b] swift to the spoil” - NIV footnote) but
the very introduction to this Messianic name at Is. 9:6 is itself a
parallelism: [a]“For unto us a child is born; [b] unto us a son is given.” It
would, therefore, be appropriate to find that this name, too, was in the form
of a parallelism as translated by the Tanakh above.
So it is clear, even to a number of Trinitarian
scholars, that Isaiah. 9:6 does not imply that Yahshua (Jesus) is Yahweh God.
ON A CONCLUDING NOTE: Why is Yahshua going to be bestowed with this title of “Everlasting
or Eternal” Father?
Answering
in points:
Ø Yahshua fulfilled his role perfectly as the Second Adam.
Ø Yahshua totally, completely and perfectly FINISHED his Father’s work.Tetelestai
– The Sacrifice Is Accomplished
This Hebrew phrase was used
in the Old Testament sacrificial system. Each year, on the Jewish holiday
called The Day of Atonement, the High Priest would enter into the temple and
make a special animal sacrifice for the sins of the people of Israel. As soon
as the priest had killed the animal, he would emerge from the place of
sacrifice and declare to the waiting crowd TETELESTIA in Hebrew language
meaning, “it is finished” in English.
In this sacrifice, all the
sins of the people of Israel were symbolically placed on the lamb that was
killed and punished in their place. Yet the Bible teaches that this sacrificial
system was never really complete or finished because the sacrifice of that lamb
was imperfect and temporary. But when YAHSHUA was impaled and died on the
STAKE, he became the perfect and final sacrifice for all of humankind’s sin.
The Book of Hebrews describes how YAHSHUA was the ultimate Lamb of ELOHIM and
by his sacrifice, the work of forgiveness was finally complete.
Just before he breathed his
last breath, YAHSHUA uttered the phrase “it is finished.”... When Yahshua
offered his perfect life as the Second Adam as a Ransom sacrifice for all of
Mankind’s sins, he said, “It is finished!” Then he bowed his head and gave up his
spirit. John 19:28-30. That phrase is actually the translation of one word,
“Tetelestai,” in the original Hebrew language of the Bible.
Ø Yahweh was pleased with his Son in Heaven and on Earth.
Matthew 3:17
“And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is
my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
Ø Yahweh bestowed ALL AUTHORITY in the hands of his Son Yahshua.
Matthew
28:18 |
“And Yahshua came and spake unto them, saying, All power
is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” |
Ø At present Yahshua is sitting at the right hand of his Father
Yahweh’s Throne. Soon in the future his Father Yahweh will TOTALLY SUPPORT AND
BACK HIM UP by symbolically He (Yahweh) sitting at the right hand of his Son
Yahshua’s throne.
Psalms
110: 1 and 5
Ø The Son on Accomplishment of his Earthly Mission and Task of
offering his life and blood for mankind’s sins, defeating Satan, Overcoming
death and making all things, heaven and new too, then when the Adamic Sin &
Curse is done away with permanently then the Son Yahshua will hand over pure
earth and its worshippers back to his Father Yahweh. IT IS DONE he says in Revelation 21:6
21:1 |
And I saw a new heaven and a new
earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there
was no more sea. |
||
21:2 |
And I John saw the holy city, new
Jerusalem, coming down from Elohim out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned
for her husband. |
||
21:3 |
And I heard a great voice out of
heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of Elohim is with men, and he will dwell
with them, and they shall be his people, and Yahweh himself shall be with
them, and be their Elohim. |
||
21:4 |
And Elohim shall wipe away all
tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor
crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are
passed away. |
||
21:5 |
And he that sat upon the throne
said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these
words are true and faithful. |
||
21:6 |
And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the
beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain
of the water of life freely. |
||
Ø
LAST BUT NOT THE LEAST: After achieving
everything for mankind and humankind on behalf of his Heavenly Father, Yahshua
will be RESTORING AND RETAINING AND REVIVING the lost (fatherhood) FATHER &
SON relationship that Adam (humankind) had with Yahweh back again. Hence in a very deep symbolic way,
Yahshua will become like ELOHIM YAHWEH to us and we will be like his SONS. In
this SPIRITUAL OR SYMBOLIC manner, Yahshua will be bestowed with this HONORORY
TITLE OF ETERNAL OR EVERLASTING FATHER.
Revelation
21:7 |
He that overcometh shall inherit
all things; and I will be his Elohim, and he shall
be my son. |
Hope you can see and understand the CONNECTION of the HONORARY TITLE being bestowed upon Yahshua (Jesus) in the future now. The title of ETERNAL FATHER OR EVERLASTING FATHER.
4. PRINCE OF PEACEHow is
Jesus the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6)?
Isaiah
9:6, a Messianic prophecy, says, "For to us a child is born, to us a son
is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be
called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of
Peace." What does it mean that Jesus is the Prince of Peace?
A
prince would have been understood by Isaiah's readers as a leader among a group
of people. Jesus certainly fits this role as leader of all the people of the
world. But what does it mean to be the Prince of Peace? The Hebrew word for
peace, shalom, was often used in the Old Testament to refer to a time of rest
between groups or nations. Likewise, the Greek equivalent in the New Testament,
eirene, was used regarding one of the goals of believers. For example, the
Beatitudes include the teaching, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they
shall be called sons of God" (Matthew 5:9).
In
contrast, the Pharisees misidentified Jesus, calling Him the prince of demons:
"by the prince of demons he casts out the demons" (Mark 3:22; also
Matthew 9:34; 12:24; Luke 11:15). Instead, the New Testament writers referred
to Jesus as the "Lord of lords" and "King of kings," titles
similar to that of a prince: "he who is the blessed and only Sovereign,
the King of kings and Lord of lords" (1 Timothy 6:15; also Revelation
17:14; 19:16).
Before
the death of Jesus, He told His followers, "Peace I leave with you; my
peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your
hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid" (John 14:27). Following
His resurrection, we read, "On the evening of that day, the first day of
the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews,
Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, 'Peace be with you'"
(John 20:19).
The
apostle Paul would develop the theme of peace at length in Romans. Romans 5:1
says, "Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." In Galatians 5:22, peace is noted
as part of the fruit of the Spirit. In Ephesians 2:14, Paul identifies Jesus
Himself as our peace. How did Jesus provide this peace? Colossians 1:20 shares
that it was by "making peace by the blood of his cross."
Alongside
other powerful names such as Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, and Eternal
Father, the Messiah Jesus is given the title Prince of Peace, indicating one of
His many roles—the One who is the leader of peace and offers it to others.
